Omnicef
Drug Description
Omnicef contains Cefdinir, a third generation Cephalosporin antibiotic, used for curing the bacterial infections. It is effective in fighting sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections and pneumonia. The medication works against bacterial infections only. It will not have any effect on viral contagiousness.
Mechanism
Like other Cephalosporin antibiotics, Omnicef fights bacterial growth by inhibiting the process of cell wall formation. Cell walls are important for bacterial survival as it doesn’t allow the contact of any foreign substance with the infected region. The medication triggers impairment of cell walls and kills bacteria thereby.
How to Take Omnicef
Omicef tablets are consumed orally with water, before or after the meals. The regular dosage is 600 mg, to be taken either once a day or twice every 12 hours. Take the medicine as told by the physician. Inform your doctor about your medical history and medications you are using or have used in the past. Overuse of the medication is harmful. Maintain the same amount of medication in the body and use at the same day daily. Avoid quitting the course early as it may help bacteria develop the resistance towards the drug.
Precautions
Do not take Omnicef if you have had an allergic reaction to it or any of its ingredient. The medication is known to cause mild to moderate skin reaction due to the presence of certain inactive constituents. Tell your doctor about your medical past and medications you used or are using. Do not use this medication if you detect your pregnancy. Ask your doctor first. Omnicef may or may not pass into the breast milk. However, consult a physician before using this medication while breastfeeding a baby. Omnicef causes mild diarrhea, which suggests the beginning of a new infection. Rush for medical help if your diarrhea becomes watery and bloody.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Omnicef are vomiting, nausea, mild rash, stomach pain, vaginal irritation, muscle fatigue and dizziness. Serious side effects are watery and bloody diarrhea, appetite loss, sore throat, fever, swelling, seizures, weight gain, unusual bleeding, chills, dark urination, yellow skin, shortness of breath and chest pain.
